angiepants [one pocket at a time]

Hi, I'm a newly turned 22 year old long island lady whose living her second life in philly, home of squished pretzels and 'brotherly' love. I'm going to school for Physical Therapy and known to geek over anything anatomy or adaptive sports. My favorites are fruit, artsy things, and laying on the ground instead of actual chairs. This is my place of inspirations, thoughts, and daily occurences. Enjoy.

I carry my sony camera around in its leather pouch with me 96% of the time.

GPOYW: This is when I got sat on but truth is, I miss the freeing ‘freshmen fun’ that I used to have more often with my residents edition.

So 24 hours of being busy and anxious on call for two building —> led to two floor meetings directly after. But you know what? Residents + Toliet Paper = the best catch up and booster. (It was a game)

Apparently I’m now going to be playing ‘Ariel’ the Little Mermaid in a crazy Good vs. Bad Disney Character movie. And there is a PotLuck and Movienight coming up that residents are excited to help me run.

This lifestyle can be crazy, but if you allow it once in awhile and put pedal to the metal, it can be crazy worth it.

Not exactly ‘sexy’ but Attractive and you know they’re genuiney a good person and could laugh with if their weren’t boundaries of employment.

On things the Physical Therapy Student RA does for Residents

 • Lend out Ace Bandages like a mini-manufacture (all varying sizes)
 • Examine wrist joints, knee joints and elbows to see if pain can be reproduced
 • Palpate.
 • Give out Tylenol, Airborne, Tums, DayQuil
 • Spurt out nutritional or exercise advice
 • Worry about their physical well-being. Consistently.

On Things that need adjusting and accruing time with

Friendships with the other people in my DPT program. There are 62 of them. I’ve become very dependent on professors during undergrad because I’m an independent learner and honestly, have some trust issues with people my own age.

But now? These are people with the same directed end goal as me and they’re still young but adults (aka: 21 and over). That’s intimidating.

I have residents that seem easier to connect with because of home territory and undergraduate friends that have similar history and experiences with. Hands down, I’m currently more open with them.

It’s different and definitely difficult to socialize with people in your future profession, who you’re supposed to respect opinions and hear opinions from. But at the same time, you’re all the same young adult age and should be able to have familiarity and laughs with to make it through the three years?

Tough Calls.

Door Decs, Bulletin Boards, Arts n’ Crafts OH MY

Looking back, so much time and preparation was spent on a whole hallway when it was a ghost town of people.

My theme? The Roaring 1920s and ‘Get in the Swing of Things’ (BTW: Those are my own Jeans pockets cut out for putting stuff in throughout the year)

Funny Story: Drexel Students already don’t have a summer. There is one week of break early September. Oh you’re an RA? You give up that whole week to paper cuts, training and bonding.

Dazed & Confused.

Where is my floor?

Where is my staff?

I signed out my key to North Hall and officially don’t work OR live there. I’m lost and more alone in this new across the street quiet building.

I understand where RA’s can go wrong. Where they are too strict on rules come the weekend, etc. And obviously, this can vary from school to school.
But I am only serious about being an RA because I care and I actually have to do a lot of hours, planning, and outreach to keep my job/housing/meals.
2 hours at the desk
2 hour staff meetings each week
1 assigned weekday 7pm-7am duty
4 Weekend 7pm-7pm duty weekends
An occasional holiday (when everyone else normally goes home) duty
10 mandatory events
2 Building Wide Events
Boards, fliers, boards, and more fliers constantly
Using my own ‘petty cash’ out of pocket for anything on a small RA budget
Safety and Sanitations, move in switches, move out switches, term break closing.
Just being on CALL for anything that happens within every floor, every resident, every staff member of your building.
This doesn’t even cover the amount of care of put into things. No, I don’t always follow all the rules because its time and agreement I sometimes don’t have.
But my 44 residents? That’s what I take as both fun and serious because I’m a friend, resource, interpreter (and somewhat mother figure) at heart.

Lifestyle of an RA

 • 50% OVERLY EXCITED (about events, to seem friendly to residents, to be a campus promoter)
 • 50% OVERLY TIRED (from all of the above, not being allowed to ‘show tired’, being on call, not having much free time)

On something I shouldn’t have to apologize for: Ranting rather than having guts to say so in person

 • Do you want to meet with me about a serious suitemate conflict that ‘keeps you anxious and nervous every night’ and might have to ‘bring your parents into it’ or NOT?
 • STOP pushing the time back
 • Don’t write me really formal, detailed letters of complaint when you don’t have the decency to talk more than 2 words to me in person.
 • NO. I really don’t want to meet and discuss your problems on MY 21st birthday. Even though it’s a Monday, let me have MY DAY.
